Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a prominent technical university located in Bauchi, Nigeria. It is named in honor of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The institution is renowned for its focus on science and technology education, contributing significantly to Nigeria's educational and technological advancement.
History
The university's origins date back to 1980 when it was established as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi. Teaching commenced in October 1981 with pre-degree and remedial courses. By October 1982, the School of Science and Science Education began offering degree programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education.
In 1984, the university merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, becoming Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi campus. This merger was part of a broader strategy to streamline and strengthen higher education in Nigeria. However, in 1988, the university regained its autonomy and was renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, reflecting its mission to honor the legacy of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
