The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) initiated a two-week definite strike starting on 2 December 2024. This decisive action came after the government failed to fulfil nine critical items in the work plan jointly developed to address long-standing trade disputes. The Union characterized the strike as both a warning and a potential prelude to an indefinite industrial action, should the issues remain unresolved.
Government and Union Meeting Held to Resolve Issues
In response to the strike, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment convened a conciliation meeting on 9 December 2024. The meeting brought together representatives from ASUP and the government to negotiate and find solutions to the ongoing disputes. During the discussions, both parties reached an understanding, resulting in the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Key Agreements Outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding
The MoU laid out specific steps aimed at resolving the disputes and ensuring progress on the agreed work plan. It also emphasized the need for accountability from all stakeholders in implementing the resolutions. To track progress and address outstanding issues, a review meeting was scheduled for 23 January 2025.
Union Plans Post-Review Meeting
Following the review meeting, ASUP’s National Executive Council will convene to evaluate the outcomes and determine the Union’s next course of action. This evaluation will focus on the government’s commitment to fulfilling the terms of the MoU and addressing members’ grievances comprehensively.
Members Directed to Resume Work
In the interim, ASUP has directed its members to return to their respective duties starting Monday, 16 December 2024. The Union expressed its gratitude to members for their active participation in the strike and their unwavering solidarity throughout the process.
Call to Action for the Government
ASUP has urged the government to honour the agreements reached to prevent further industrial actions. The Union highlighted the importance of resolving these disputes to promote stability and progress in the nation’s polytechnic education sector.
Conclusion
For the latest updates on this issue, members and stakeholders are encouraged to follow official ASUP communications. Ensuring transparency and timely information dissemination remains a priority for the Union as it continues to advocate for the rights and welfare of its members.
