AUN President’s Statement
Dr. DeWayne P. Frazier, President of AUN, announced that these scholarships aim to encourage young Nigerians to pursue their first degrees within the country. He emphasized that AUN offers global-standard education at a fraction of the cost of studying abroad. Dr. Frazier highlighted the importance of this initiative in showing appreciation for the support from AUN parents and alumni, who have been crucial to the university’s success.
“We are thrilled to offer the new 20th Anniversary Tuition Scholarships in celebration of two decades of the American University of Nigeria. These scholarships aim to recognize the outstanding achievements of our students and bolster opportunities for more enrollment across the nation and the African continent,” said Dr. Frazier. “We are urging students to take advantage of this new program as there will never be a time that the university fees are this competitively priced. Help us celebrate our 20th Anniversary at AUN!”
Impact on Local Communities
The scholarships also aim to alleviate some financial burdens on AUN parents, especially those with multiple family members attending the university. The focus on Nursing, Public Health, and Engineering is intended to boost local enrollment and address the shortage of skilled professionals in these vital areas. This is particularly significant for the northeast region, which faces many challenges as it recovers from a decade-long insurgency.
Additionally, AUN is launching a STEM initiative for senior secondary schools in Adamawa State. This program aims to foster greater interest in science, technology, and health sciences among students.
AUN’s Legacy
Founded in 2003 by former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar GCON, AUN was established to educate the brightest students from Nigeria and other African countries. The university began its academic activities in 2004 and welcomed its first class in 2005. It currently offers 33 majors and 14 minors across seven schools, including Arts & Sciences, Business & Entrepreneurship, Information Technology & Computing, Law, Engineering, Basic Medical & Allied Health Sciences, and the Graduate School.
Graduate Scholarships
Starting from the fall 2024 semester, entering graduate students will receive a 50% tuition fee remission under the 20th anniversary scholarship offers. These scholarships are available for candidates enrolled in programs such as the AUN/UNICEF M.Sc. in Communication for Social and Behavior Change, Master of Business Administration, and Professional Master in Information and Communication Science. The scholarships also cover regular Masters and doctoral degrees in Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, and Business and Entrepreneurship.
AUN’s Distinctive Approach
AUN’s American-style liberal arts education emphasizes community impact. Learning and research outcomes are designed to address the diverse socioeconomic challenges in the northeast region. This unique approach is highlighted by alumni like Mr. Gwaha Madwate, AUN Class Speaker 2017, who is currently enrolled in the Wadsworth African Doctoral Fellowship in South Africa.
Mr. Madwate, a recipient of the 2020 Mandela Rhodes Scholarship and 2022 MasterCard Foundation Scholarship, praised AUN for equipping students with a service-driven mentality. “AUN students receive leadership training and community service learning, making it easy for them to access international scholarships seeking young people passionate about solving local problems,” he said.
