Australia Withdraws, Paving the Way for Saudi Arabia to Host the 2034 FIFA World Cup
Australia has strategically withdrew from the FIFA World Cup 2034 bidding process, greatly increasing Saudi Arabia's prospects of hosting the esteemed competition. Just a few hours before the FIFA deadline for declarations of interest, on October 31, 2023, the Australia Football Association made this news.
The decision was made by Australia because it wanted to concentrate its resources on hosting the Club World Cup in 2029 and the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2026.
The Australia Football Association officially announced that they would not be participating in the 2034 competition.
Due to this development, Saudi Arabia is now the only country eligible to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034, therefore securing their right to host this well acclaimed competition. After Qatar's historic 2022 hosting, Saudi Arabia would host the FIFA World Cup for the second time in its history if its bid is accepted.
The 2034 World Cup is anticipated to have a distinct format, analogous to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with competition held in the winter due to Saudi Arabia's intense summer heat.
Furthermore, this edition will be unique because it comes after the historic 2026 World Cup, for the first time in the tournament's history, six nations from three continents will share hosting duties. The United States, Mexico, and Canada will host the World Cup in North America prior to the 2034 competition, which will be the first time the competition is staged in three different countries. The 2034 World Cup will also include 48 teams instead of just 32, which will increase the enthusiasm and anticipation for this historic athletic event.
