Baidu, a major player in China's tech landscape, is exploring the possibility of incorporating Tesla's robotaxi technology or Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities into its operations in China.
Xu Baoqiang, Baidu's General Manager for the autonomous driving department, revealed to Shanghai Securities News that the company is open to potential collaboration opportunities with Tesla. This collaboration could involve leveraging specific Tesla applications tailored for the Chinese market.
The move comes amidst growing interest in autonomous driving technologies in China, with local governments showing support for initiatives such as Tesla's FSD. Elon Musk's proposal to test Full Self-Driving functions in vehicles already deployed in the Chinese market, particularly taxis, has garnered attention. Musk also suggested integrating Tesla's FSD software into Chinese taxi services.
Baidu and Tesla have an existing partnership in China, with Tesla announcing plans to utilize Baidu Maps to enhance China's version of Full Self-Driving.
Recent reports indicate that Tesla's FSD has received tentative approval in China, following successful clearance of critical regulatory hurdles. Elon Musk's discussions with key figures in the Chinese automotive industry during his visit to China further underscore the progress in this regard.

Lars Moravy, Tesla's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, emphasized the importance of regulatory developments in enabling broader approval of autonomous vehicles, not only in the US but also in other countries.
