Unlocking Africa's Tourism Potential: $168 Billion Boost in 10 Years
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and VFS Global predict a substantial economic injection of $168 billion into Africa's economy over the next decade. This surge is expected to generate over 18 million jobs, reflecting a potential annualized growth of 6.5%. The report, "Unlocking Opportunities for Travel and Tourism Growth in Africa," outlines key policies driving this growth trajectory, aiming for a contribution exceeding $350 billion.
Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, highlighted Africa's remarkable tourism evolution, showcasing doubled growth since 2000. The right policies, she notes, could unlock an additional $168 billion in the coming years.

In 2019, Africa's travel and tourism sector made a notable economic contribution, exceeding $186 billion and attracting 84 million international visitors, playing a significant role in sustaining 25 million jobs, constituting 5.6% of total regional employment.

Key opportunities within Africa's travel and tourism sector include strategic investments, enhanced connectivity, streamlined visa processes, adoption of low-carbon energy, and improved water efficiency measures. Capitalizing on these can promote sustainable growth, job creation, and economic development.
Global tourism is rebounding, with Tourism Economics forecasting global outbound trips to surpass 1.25 billion by the end of 2023, exceeding 85% of the peak level achieved in 2019.
