The CBN E Naira : Functions and Leadership
Often referred to as the Apex Bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) holds a dominant position as the largest and most influential bank in the country. It serves as the overarching authority for all other banks, as their existence in Nigeria relies on the CBN's approval. Despite not engaging in typical commercial operations like other Nigerian banks, the question arises: What are the functions of the CBN? Here are some of its key roles:
- Licensing Authority: Issues licenses to banks wishing to establish or operate in Nigeria.
- Forex Management: Acts as the primary procurer of foreign exchange after export revenue.
- Regulatory Oversight: Governs the activities of banks, including setting interest rates and ensuring reasonable loan terms.
- Economic Collaboration: Works with the Ministry of Finance to maintain economic stability.
- Inflation Control: Regulates the money flow to prevent high inflation.
- Currency Protection: Safeguards the Naira against devaluation through policies and guidelines.
- SME Support: Facilitates the growth of small and medium enterprises through grants and loans.
- Government Banking: Serves as the primary banker to the Federal government, handling transactions and investments.
- External Reserves Management: Maintains Nigeria's external reserves.
- Financial Advisory Role: Provides financial advice to the Federal government.
The immense power vested in the CBN is evident, with significant implications for those who have led this institution. Explore the notable individuals who have served as CBN governors since its inception.
