The University of Benin was established in 1970 as an Institute of Technology and transitioned to a full-fledged university on July 1, 1971, as accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). In April 1972, the then Military Governor of the Mid-Western State, Col. S. O. Ogbemudia, announced the university's name change during his budget speech. By April 1, 1975, the university was taken over by the Federal Government, becoming a Federal University at the request of the State Government.

Key Responsibilities
The Chief Security Officer will report directly to the Vice Chancellor and will be responsible for:

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (minimum second class lower division) from a recognized university.
- Certificate in Security Training.
- Fifteen (15) years of cognate experience in security services.
- Attainment of the rank of Superintendent of Police or equivalent in the Armed Forces.
- Experience in a similar institution is advantageous.
Conditions of Service
The successful candidate will serve a five-year term, with conditions determined by the governing laws of Federal Universities in Nigeria. Candidates above 60 years by the appointment date should not apply.
Salary
Remuneration aligns with that of Chief Security Officers across Nigerian Federal Universities, subject to periodic reviews by the Government and Governing Council.
