Job Title: Communications Assistant

Location: Bauchi

Job Purpose

The Communications Assistant will support the Communication and Advocacy team in all aspects of communication related to the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF) Grant program and WaterAid. The role involves ensuring project visibility, providing technical support in developing and implementing communication strategies, managing knowledge, and supporting fundraising activities related to the SHF project in Bauchi state.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Policy and Advocacy Department and Bauchi State Programme Lead in promoting WASH solutions for vulnerable communities.
  • Research and develop content for press statements, speeches, campaign materials, briefing notes, media publications, newsletters, bulletins, blogs, and case studies.
  • Coordinate WaterAid Nigeria’s support to state-level media and CSO networks.
  • Ensure compliance with donor branding requirements and support national and local engagement.
  • Develop and execute communication and media materials with the support of the Communications Officer.
  • Monitor and evaluate communications and media coverage, making recommendations for future activities.
  • Provide layout support for documents and publications.
  • Manage case studies, impact surveys, and research to inform stakeholders about WASH service delivery.
  • Support dissemination events for policy research reports on sanitation and hygiene.

Collaboration

  • Work with the Bauchi State Programme Lead on advocacy efforts to key stakeholders.
  • Assist in delivering WASH project objectives, particularly in sanitation and hygiene programs.
  • Develop activities and events for global days such as Handwashing Day, World Water Day, Menstrual Hygiene Day, and World Toilet Day.
  • Collaborate with the fundraising team on country program fundraising initiatives.
  • Support the Advocacy, Policy & Communications and SPEL team in delivering learning products and engaging in knowledge management platforms.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • University Degree in Mass Communication, Social Science, Development Studies, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in communication or media relations.
  • Experience in preparing reports and case studies.
  • Knowledge of website/content management systems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop or other design software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to WaterAid’s values.
  • Basic understanding of development and WASH issues.
  • Excellent English language skills, both verbal and written.
  • Understanding of media and social media as influencing tools.
  • Experience liaising with journalists.
  • Knowledge of measuring and analytics tools for media and social media activity.

Desirable:

  • Communications or media-related degree.
  • Previous NGO experience.
  • Interest in international development.
  • Experience managing intranet content.
  • Experience influencing decision-makers through media work.
