About the University of Uyo
The University of Uyo is located in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It was elevated to the status of a Federal University on October 1, 1991, by the Federal Government of Nigeria. This transformation involved the transfer of students, faculty, academic programs, and facilities from the former University of Cross River State, which had been established in 1983.
The institution has undergone significant changes throughout its history. It originally started as a Teacher’s College, evolved into an Advanced Teacher’s College, then a College of Education affiliated with the University of Port Harcourt for degree programs, and was later known as the University of Cross River (UNICROSS) before officially becoming the University of Uyo on October 1, 1991.
