The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is advocating for a united approach to tackle Nigeria's ongoing food insecurity and achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in ending hunger and ensuring food security.
At the 2024 Annual Colloquium of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ogun State Chapter, Vice-Chancellor Professor Babatunde Kehinde emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private stakeholders to address Nigeria's food crisis.
Public Relations as a Tool for Addressing Food Crisis
During the colloquium, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Professor Kehinde praised NIPR for keeping food security a priority. He highlighted the crucial role that strategic Public Relations can play in fostering partnerships between the government, academia, and private sector to create lasting agricultural solutions.
Kehinde also discussed FUNAAB’s leadership in agriculture, underscoring the university’s recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nourished Choice Foods Ltd., aimed at reducing food costs and boosting production.
FUNAAB's Agricultural Achievements and Initiatives
FUNAAB continues to spearhead agricultural development through various initiatives, including the ongoing harvest of a 2-hectare tomato farm managed by students under the Centre for Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS), a 22-hectare Cassava Bio-Ethanol Farm, and a 9-hectare maize farm project in collaboration with NOLAP. These projects are part of the university's efforts to contribute to food security through research and innovation.
Addressing Misconceptions About FUNAAB’s Role
Professor Kehinde clarified that FUNAAB's mission is not to directly feed the nation but to train students to become impactful agricultural professionals. He proudly highlighted FUNAAB’s recent recognition as the Best University of Agriculture in Africa and 7th best globally, as well as its top ranking in Nigeria for achieving SDG2—Zero Hunger.
Call for Action and Collaboration
In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor called for reshaping the narrative around agriculture in Nigeria, urging Public Relations professionals and other stakeholders to celebrate successes and drive innovation within the sector.
Contributions from Ogun State Government and NIPR
The Ogun State Government, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo, emphasized that food security requires concerted efforts from both public and private sectors. He encouraged innovative agricultural practices and urged professionals to promote agriculture as an attractive and profitable career path.
Focus on Sustainable Agricultural Practices
NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, represented by Mr. Tope Adaramola, stressed the need for mechanized farming and sustainable agricultural practices. Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, Chairperson of NIPR Ogun Chapter, called on stakeholders to engage deeply and collaborate to solve Nigeria's food crisis.
Awards and Recognition
FUNAAB was awarded an Award of Excellence for its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts during the event. Governor Dapo Abiodun was also recognized for his contributions to food security in Ogun State.
The colloquium concluded with the launch of the Image Maker Journal, reinforcing the importance of Public Relations in addressing food insecurity and fostering collaboration among key players in Nigeria's agricultural sector.
Conclusion
The 2024 NIPR Annual Colloquium served as a powerful reminder of the crucial role collaboration plays in addressing Nigeria's food crisis. With contributions from key stakeholders across academia, government, and the private sector, it is clear that public relations can be a driving force in reshaping perceptions, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and fostering partnerships.
The efforts of institutions like FUNAAB, under the leadership of Professor Babatunde Kehinde, exemplify the impact that research and innovation can have on achieving food security. By continuing to unite various sectors and celebrating agricultural successes, Nigeria can move closer to realizing its goal of ending hunger and ensuring a sustainable agricultural future for all.
