Federal Government Launches Modern Cassava Processing Plant in Ondo, Creating 1,000 Jobs
In a significant move to bolster economic growth and create employment opportunities, the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), commissioned a state-of-the-art integrated cassava processing plant in Igbara-Oke, Ondo State. Dr Jumai Adamu-Tutuwa, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of FIIRO, emphasized the plant's potential to generate 1,000 jobs along the cassava value chain, aligning with the government's commitment to enhance food security and elevate the nation's economic standing.
The modern facility, requiring approximately 10 tons of cassava roots daily, involves collaboration with over 20 local farmers who will supply an average of 500kg each per day. Adamu-Tutuwa highlighted the plant's role in fostering rural socio-economic development, engaging various stakeholders such as processors, marketers, farmers, and transporters. This initiative aims to mitigate challenges related to post-harvest losses and cassava product wastage in the community and the larger Ondo region.
Adamu-Tutuwa expressed confidence in the plant's capacity to empower farmers and promote trade, contributing to the overall growth of the Igbara-Oke Community. Emphasizing the importance of innovation, science, and technology in driving economic transformation, she underscored the role of the plant in turning Nigeria's economy towards production, diversification, and sustainable growth.
With the strategic utilization of the facility and the fertile land of Igbara-Oke, the Director-General envisions the plant as a catalyst for community development, contributing significantly to industrialization, productivity, and national development. She stressed that harnessing the potential of the plant would not only create jobs but also position Igbara-Oke at the forefront of Nigeria's industrial landscape.
