When nasal congestion strikes, breathing can become challenging. Fortunately, there are effective ways to alleviate this discomfort and restore easy breathing. One method involves cleaning your nostrils with either a nasal spray or a nasal wash.
Using a Nasal Wash
Nasal washes, especially when using a salt solution, prove beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic nasal issues or sinus problems. By rinsing the inside of your nose with a salt solution, you can reduce swelling, enhance airflow, and open up sinus passages. Additionally, this method aids in removing mucus and relieving congestion.
To prepare your saline solution, combine 1 quart of distilled water with 1 teaspoon of Kosher salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda in a clean glass jar. Stir the solution thoroughly and store it at room temperature. Remember to replace the solution weekly.
It's essential to use a bulb syringe or a neti pot for effective nasal rinsing. These items are readily available at your local pharmacy. Before starting the rinse, ensure proper hand hygiene to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Stand over a sink or bathtub during the nasal wash to collect any drainage. Gently administer the solution into your nostrils, aiming towards the back of your head. Avoid inhaling through your nose during this process.
After administering the solution, tilt your head forward with your chin to your chest to allow excess solution to drain. Avoid swallowing the solution if it enters your mouth.
Repeat the process for the other nostril, alternating until the solution is depleted. Initially, you might experience a mild burning sensation, which should diminish with repeated use. Adjust the solution's saltiness if irritation persists.
Using Nasal Spray
Over-the-counter nasal sprays are effective for alleviating symptoms associated with allergies such as a stuffy or runny nose. However, they should not be used to treat flu or cold symptoms.
Common nasal sprays contain corticosteroids like Fluticasone, which prevent the release of substances causing allergy symptoms. Alternatively, nasal sprays containing xylitol, purified water, salt, and grapefruit seed extract offer drug-free relief and are safe for all ages.
Follow the recommended dosage indicated on the nasal spray label. Proper hand washing is crucial before each use. Prime the pump if it's your first time using the spray or if it hasn't been used within the last week.
Clear your nostrils by blowing your nose before administering the spray. Seal one nostril with your finger and insert the applicator tip into the other nostril. Breathe in gently as you release the spray. Repeat for the other nostril if necessary.
After each use, wipe the applicator clean with a tissue to prevent contamination. Store the nasal spray in a dry, room-temperature location.
Be mindful of potential side effects, and consult your doctor if you experience any adverse reactions.
By incorporating these methods into your routine, you can effectively alleviate nasal congestion and breathe freely once again.
