Job Title: Hygiene Officer
Location: Nguru, Yobe State
Employment Type: Full Time
Reporting to: WASH Programme Manager
Proposed Start Date: October 2024
Key Responsibilities
- WASH EM Implementation: Ensure the implementation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Emergency Management (EM) approaches, collecting relevant data for targeted hygiene promotion interventions.
- Rapid Needs Assessment: Coordinate and participate in joint multi-sectoral rapid needs assessments, analyze the results, and design a context-specific hygiene promotion strategy based on the findings.
- BabyWASH Approach: Promote and implement the BabyWash approach, gathering data to improve BabyWash interventions tailored to specific community contexts.
- Training & IEC Materials: Collaborate with the WASH Program Manager to revise and adapt hygiene promotion training and Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to suit local contexts and target groups, ensuring they align with the project’s communication plan.
- Community Mobilization: Assist with community mobilization efforts, ensuring effective outreach and engagement.
- Inclusive & Safe Interventions: Ensure that technical interventions cater to the needs of different target groups, eliminating public health hazards, and adhering to hygiene promotion strategies.
- Team Coordination: Lead and coordinate the Public Health Promotion (PHP) team, ensuring alignment with the overall hygiene promotion strategy.
- Training Development: Develop training tools on technical topics and facilitate internal staff and external stakeholder training sessions.
- Technical Support & Guidelines: Support the WASH Program Manager in creating technical guidelines and tools to enhance hygiene promotion services.
- Staff Management & Recruitment: Participate in staff recruitment, oversee daily team management, set performance missions, and conduct performance appraisals in line with Action Against Hunger’s performance management policies.
- Health Facility Assessments: Conduct WASH FIT assessments for health facilities, record lessons learned, and recommend areas for improvement.
- Integration with Other Sectors: Work closely with the Nutrition and Health teams to ensure integrated service delivery to target populations.
- Emergency Needs Assessment: Continuously assess emergency needs from a broader public health perspective and ensure response planning aligns with local requirements.
- Beneficiary Registration & Distribution: Lead beneficiary selection and registration, managing the distribution of Non-Food Items (NFI) kits with the Field Assistant team.
- Post Distribution Monitoring: Collaborate with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) team to ensure post-distribution monitoring (PDM) for all distributed NFI items.
- Compliance with SPHERE Standards: Ensure that all hygiene promotion activities meet SPHERE minimum standards for humanitarian response.
- Local Representation: Represent Action Against Hunger at local WASH meetings and technical working groups related to public health promotion and NFI distribution, as requested by the line manager.
Requirements
- Educational Background: B.Sc in Public and Environmental Health, Hygiene, and Sanitation-related fields.
- Experience:
- Two to three years of relevant work experience, especially in emergency programs (RRM) and supervising hygiene promotion activities.
- Experience working in remote areas with limited services is a plus.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong command of Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Fluency in English and Hausa.
- Adaptability, flexibility, and willingness to travel within Northern Nigeria.
- Additional Qualifications: Previous experience in WASH-related interventions, community mobilization, and integration with health and nutrition activities.
