Approval has been granted by the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Senate for the establishment of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, as disclosed during the Senate's meeting on May 29, 2024, at the Postgraduate Hall. Professor Joseph Kinanee, the Director of Academic Planning, introduced the proposal, which garnered enthusiastic support.
Institute Objectives and Pending Verifications
The Institute, aimed at promoting peace education and conflict resolution, awaits appointment of a Director and resource verification from the National Universities Commission (NUC). Notably, it will spearhead initiatives such as academic journal publications and mentorship, alongside projects like the NDDC-supported Corpers’ Lodge and Science Laboratory.
Leadership Confirmation and Academic Contributions
Additionally, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, the Senate's Chairman, affirmed the impending appointment of a Director to lead the Institute. Pending NUC verification, this initiative is poised to enhance conflict resolution efforts and contribute significantly to peace-building endeavors.
Furthermore, newly promoted Professors were commended for their academic contributions and encouraged to actively participate in university affairs, emphasizing mentorship and scholarly publishing to enrich the academic landscape.
Acknowledgment of Academic Endeavors
Efforts by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Professor Good Wilson, and Associate Dean, Professor Chibuzor Nwobueze, in publishing two significant journals were acknowledged, with a call for continued endeavors to benefit the academic community.
The mobilization of resources by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for infrastructure projects, coupled with sustainability measures like solar panel installations, was highlighted by the Acting Vice-Chancellor.
Addressing Student Attendance and Integrity
Concerns regarding student attendance and academic integrity were raised, with measures proposed to address these issues. Professor Onuchuku emphasized the importance of genuine student engagement and cautioned against academic extortion practices.
To combat attendance issues, it was suggested that students should register their courses at the beginning of each semester, including providing passport photographs for easy identification.
Support for International Education and Safety Measures
Moreover, support for French Language students abroad was acknowledged, emphasizing the university's commitment to international education. Fire safety measures were underscored, stressing the importance of electrical appliance safety and student compliance. In light of recent incidents, Professor Chibuzor Nwobueze urged staff to ensure all electrical appliances are turned off before leaving their offices.
Approval of Academic Results
Lastly, the Senate approved academic results, reinforcing the university's commitment to maintaining high academic standards. The results were presented by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Faculty Deans, and the Director of the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE). This approval marks another step in ensuring the quality and integrity of academic achievements at IAUE.
