Addressing Inhaler Affordability in Nigeria: A Call for Government Action
In a recent video, a Nigerian consumer expressed concern over the soaring prices of GSK inhalers, calling for government action. Analyzing the cost on Amazon, a Ventolin Hfa inhaler should be around N25,000, but it's being sold in Nigeria for N37,500, surpassing the minimum wage.
With insurance, the cost drops to N6,000, highlighting the importance of healthcare coverage. Similar to the U.S. Medicaid program, Nigeria could establish a safety net to aid those unable to afford medical expenses.
A responsible government has various options, such as subsidizing pharmaceutical companies through tax waivers or eliminating duties on medical costs. Allocating funds from Nigeria's hydrocarbon revenue can sustain healthcare subsidies.
Addressing the root issue, the government's willingness to fund an entitlement program is crucial. By providing incentives like tax holidays, the government can encourage pharmaceutical companies like GSK to invest in local production, ensuring affordable access to vital medications.
Despite the affordability challenge, Nigeria's spending problem, rather than revenue, remains a core issue. Urgent action is needed to prioritize essential healthcare over luxury expenditures like yachts.
