Interswitch Group reiterates its commitment to advancing STEM education among secondary school students across Africa. The integrated payment and digital commerce company has announced the launch of its annual National Science Competition, alongside a significant increase in the prize money allocation, now totaling NGN30 million.
Cherry Eromosele, the Executive Vice President of Group Marketing and Corporate Communications at Interswitch, conveyed this commitment in a statement released to the press in Lagos. She emphasized the competition's core objective: to recognize academic excellence, stimulate healthy competition, and cultivate a new generation of STEM professionals in Africa.
The Interswitch Spark competition, a voluntary initiative, forms a vital part of Interswitch's corporate social responsibility efforts in education. It spans various stages, including qualifying online assessments, national examinations, semi-finals, and grand finals, engaging participants from both Nigeria and Kenya.
Eromosele detailed the enhanced prize structure, with the grand prize winner now receiving NGN15 million in scholarships over a five-year period, along with a laptop and monthly stipends. First and second runners-up will be awarded NGN10 million and NGN5 million in scholarships, respectively, among other benefits.
Furthermore, Interswitch plans to purchase Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) e-PINS for the top 200 preliminary qualifiers, facilitating their participation in the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) next year.
The expanded reward system aims to promote inclusivity and encourage greater participation, particularly among students from underprivileged backgrounds. Eromosele highlighted the positive impact of previous editions on STEM education in Nigeria and Kenya, underscoring Interswitch's determination to further invest in this initiative.
