Iowa State University Scholarship for Sub-Saharan African Students in Food Security Studies
Iowa State University introduces a $25,000 annual scholarship through the Borel Global Fellows Program for Sub-Saharan African students enrolling in graduate studies at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This initiative, established in 2018 by ISU alumni Jim and Marcia Borel, aims to combat food insecurity and improve the well-being of subsistence farmers in the region.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Borel Global Fellows Program, applicants must secure admission to a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, hold citizenship in a Sub-Saharan African country, pledge to contribute to food security in the region, conduct the majority of their research there, and express an intention to work and reside in Sub-Saharan Africa post-graduation.
Funding Details
The scholarship offers a maximum of $25,000 per year per student, covering graduate student stipends or a combination of stipend and research funding. The duration is up to 30 months for MS students and up to 42 months for PhD students. Additionally, travel funding is provided for both students and advisors traveling to and from Africa for research purposes.
Application Process
Applicants need a comprehensive application, including a cover letter from the major professor, the student's CV, and a copy of the student's statement of purpose. The annual deadline for submissions is January 15. The major professor's cover letter should express commitment to providing additional necessary funding and supporting the student's research endeavors in Sub-Saharan Africa.
