The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has recently revealed a startling revelation regarding the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). According to reports, a father and his son have been arrested for their alleged involvement in impersonation during the exam. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, unveiled this disconcerting information to the press following his monitoring of the exam at the Kaduna State University CBT Centre.
Expressing disbelief and concern, Prof. Oloyede questioned the father's actions, stating, "We have a case of a father impersonating his son, writing an examination for the son and I wonder, are you not destroying your son’s future?" Both individuals are now in custody, prompting reflection on the consequences of their actions, as they find themselves locked up together.
While the specifics of the incident's location remain undisclosed, Prof. Oloyede highlighted the broader issue of examination misconduct. He noted that despite the smoother and faster conduct of the exam due to improved technology, impersonation remains a significant challenge. One notable loophole identified is the possession of multiple National Identification Numbers (NINs), undermining the effectiveness of identity verification procedures. The Registrar pledged to address this concern with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
In addition, Prof. Oloyede addressed concerns regarding candidates who missed the exam, emphasizing that JAMB cannot afford to organize a separate session for those who failed to appear due to personal negligence. He attributed many of these absences to students from hostels who were compelled to register through schools, often driven by monetary motives.
The revelation of a father and son engaging in impersonation during the 2024 UTME serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring the integrity of Nigeria's examination system. It underscores the need for robust measures to combat fraud and uphold the credibility of educational assessments.
