At a rally held on Tuesday, Kamala Harris urged Americans to “turn the page” on the Donald Trump era, addressing a crowd of thousands at the same location where the former president incited a mob that later attacked the Capitol on January 6.
Critique of Trump’s Leadership
On a chilly fall evening just a week before Election Day, the Democratic nominee delivered a sharp critique of her Republican rival. She described Trump as “unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed with grievance, and out for unchecked power.” Harris pledged to govern as a pragmatic leader, committed to listening to all Americans, including those who may disagree with her policies.
In a pointed statement, Harris remarked, “He says one of his highest priorities is to set free the violent extremists who assaulted those law enforcement officers on January 6. Donald Trump intends to use the United States military against American citizens who simply disagree with him—people he calls ‘the enemy from within.’ This is not a candidate for president who is thinking about how to make your life better.”
A Call for Unity and New Leadership
Harris delivered her message against the backdrop of the illuminated White House, a symbol of the leadership she hopes to embody in the coming months. She emphasized the need for a transition from “the drama and the conflict, the fear and the division,” stating, “It is time for a new generation of leadership in America. And I am ready to offer that leadership.”
Ahead of her speech, Harris' communications director announced on MSNBC that approximately 75,000 people had gathered at the Ellipse, a notable figure compared to the estimated 53,000 who attended Trump’s address on January 6.
Focusing on the Needs of Americans
In her speech, Harris expressed her commitment to “seek common ground” and prioritize the country over party politics. She contrasted what she described as Trump’s “enemies list” with her own “to-do list” focused on addressing the economic challenges faced by Americans. Many within her party believe that a clear economic message is essential for winning over skeptical voters.
“I have always had an instinct to protect,” she stated, referencing her background as a prosecutor. Harris outlined her plans to ban grocery price gouging, cap insulin and prescription drug costs, and assist first-time homebuyers with down payments. “I will deliver tax cuts to working people and the middle class... I will lead in honoring the dignity of work,” she promised.
Trump’s Response and the Political Landscape
In response to Harris’ campaign efforts, Trump has framed the upcoming election as a referendum on the Biden-Harris administration, blaming them for inflation and border issues. Polls indicate razor-thin margins in the seven swing states that could determine the next presidency. He has also capitalized on Harris’ earlier progressive stances, which she has since moderated.
Disruption and Opposition
As a reminder of the challenges Harris faces, pro-Palestinian protesters attempted to disrupt her speech but were unable to drown out her message. Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley preemptively rebutted her address, stating, “Kamala Harris will do anything but ‘turn the page’ today in Washington, D.C. Instead, she will stir up division because her America Last agenda has nothing to offer the American people.”
Addressing Authoritarian Rhetoric
Harris focused on Trump’s authoritarian rhetoric as part of her closing argument, reaching out to anti-Trump Republicans and center-right independents. She cited comments from former Trump chief of staff John Kelly, who referred to Trump as “certainly an authoritarian” and echoed concerns about his past positive remarks about Adolf Hitler.
Labeling Trump a “fascist,” Harris argued that he seeks unchecked power for a third consecutive election. Trump, in turn, has characterized Harris as both a fascist and a communist. As he held a rally in New York City, it was overshadowed by racially charged comments made by some of his allies.
A Complicated Campaign
Harris’ entry into the race followed President Biden’s late decision to step aside, forcing her to compress her campaign into a short time frame. She aims to connect with voters while simultaneously making a case against Trump. This balancing act has led Democrats to reassess their messaging strategies, attempting to highlight Harris' qualifications while reminding voters of the reasons they ousted Trump in 2020.
A recent poll by the Democratic firm Blueprint suggested that the most compelling anti-Trump messages among persuadable voters in swing states focused on economic issues—such as cutting grocery prices and protecting Social Security. Harris’ speech attempted to address these priorities while also invoking the specter of Trump’s authoritarianism.
A Hopeful Message
In her closing remarks, Harris assured the crowd, “I'm not perfect. I make mistakes. But here’s what I promise you. I will always listen to you. Even if you don’t vote for me. I will always tell you the truth, even if it’s difficult to hear.” She expressed her commitment to compromise and working collaboratively to achieve progress, drawing enthusiastic cheers from her audience.
As Election Day approaches, Harris’ speech represents a pivotal moment in her campaign, aiming to galvanize support and present a vision of unity and progress for America.
