Watermark

The Centre for Women Development and Entrepreneurship at Kwara State University (KWASU) celebrated the graduation of its 3rd cohort, consisting of fifteen women, on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024. The event marked the completion of an intensive training program designed to empower women with vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

Empowerment Through Training

The graduation ceremony was not just a celebration of academic success but a testament to KWASU's commitment to fostering women's empowerment and entrepreneurship within the community. Each graduate received certificates and empowerment tools, symbolizing their readiness to enter the workforce and make meaningful contributions to society.

Vice-Chancellor's Message to the Graduates

During the event, the Vice-Chancellor of KWASU, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, delivered a heartfelt address. He commended the graduates for their dedication and encouraged them to be proud ambassadors of both the university and their communities. Professor Jimoh emphasized the importance of leveraging the skills and resources they gained during the training to uplift themselves and contribute positively to society.

He reiterated the university's goal in establishing the Centre, which is to equip women with vocational skills that will not only foster self-sufficiency but also create jobs, stimulating economic growth in their respective regions.

Professor Jimoh shared exciting developments, noting that while the Akerebiata Centre was the first of its kind, two additional training hubs have been established in other senatorial districts. Plans for opening a fourth centre are already in motion, reflecting the university’s broader vision of reaching more women across the state.

He also announced a significant development: future cohorts would see an increase in participants, with the intake rising from 15 to 20 women, allowing more individuals to benefit from the program.

Advice from the Committee Chairman

Professor Mubaraq Sanni, Chairman of the Committee for the Centres for Women Development, also addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of perseverance. He encouraged the graduates to fully utilize the opportunities the training has provided and apply their newly acquired skills to enhance their personal lives and local economies.

Professor Sanni underscored the broader mission of the Centre—to empower women not just for their own benefit, but to drive social and economic transformation in their communities.

Presentation of Empowerment Tools and Awards

A key highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of empowerment tools to the graduates. In recognition of their hard work and commitment, each woman received an industrial sewing machine and an Android smartphone, tools aimed at enabling them to produce and market their products more effectively in the digital economy. These resources are critical in ensuring that the women can immediately put their skills into practice and tap into the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

In addition to the standard graduation awards, three standout graduates were honored for their exceptional performance. These women were recognized for their discipline, enterprise, and positive impact on their peers. Each received a cash prize and a certificate of excellence, further highlighting the Centre’s dedication to rewarding excellence and promoting role models within the cohort.

Conclusion

The Centre for Women Development and Entrepreneurship at KWASU continues to play a transformative role in the lives of women by providing them with the skills, tools, and confidence to succeed in today’s world. As the program expands, the Centre aims to impact even more women, helping them not only become self-reliant but also catalysts for change within their communities.
