Lagos State to Enforce Ban on Single-Use Plastics in 2025
Watermark

The Lagos State Government is making significant strides in managing plastic waste by implementing a ban on single-use plastics (SUPs), effective January 2025. This initiative was reaffirmed during an Engagement Workshop held on October 3rd in Ikeja, where the government unveiled its plans for stricter plastic waste management policies aimed at creating a cleaner environment for all residents.

Details of the Ban on Single-Use Plastics

The upcoming ban targets a range of single-use plastics, including styrofoam plates and cups, plastic straws, single-use cutlery, and nylon bags that are less than 40 microns. While these items have been prohibited since January 2024, active enforcement will commence in January 2025, following a one-year grace period to allow stakeholders to adapt to the changes.

Introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

In a move to enhance accountability, the Lagos State Government is adopting an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy for plastic products like polyethylene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and carrier bags thicker than 40 microns. Under this policy, producers will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of their plastic products, including the management of collection, recycling, and disposal.

Establishment of the Plastic Waste Management Fund

To bolster plastic waste management efforts, the Lagos State Government has announced the creation of a Plastic Waste Management Fund. This fund will facilitate collaboration between the state, producers, and Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs). Contributions from plastic producers and major importers will finance the fund, ensuring effective solutions to address plastic waste issues throughout the state.

Stakeholder Engagement and Awareness Campaign

The Engagement Workshop served as a platform to reaffirm commitments made with various stakeholders and to kick off a comprehensive advocacy campaign. This campaign aims to educate producers, stakeholders, and the general public about the state’s plastic waste management strategies and new requirements.

The Lagos State Government is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices that protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Conclusion

As the Lagos State Government prepares to enforce the ban on single-use plastics in January 2025, it marks a pivotal step towards a more sustainable future.

This initiative not only aims to reduce plastic pollution but also empowers producers to take responsibility for their products through the Extended Producer Responsibility policy. With the establishment of the Plastic Waste Management Fund and a commitment to stakeholder engagement and education, Lagos is setting a precedent for effective plastic waste management.

By working together, the government, producers, and residents can create a cleaner, healthier environment that benefits everyone in the state. Embracing these changes is crucial for the well-being of our planet and future generations. Let us all be part of this transformative journey towards a sustainable Lagos.
