Revolutionizing Passport Services: Nigeria to Introduce Online Biometric System by February 2024
The Nigerian government is set to revolutionize passport services with the introduction of a fully biometric system by February 2024. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this groundbreaking initiative during the sixth edition of the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit.
Tunji-Ojo highlighted the challenges associated with traditional passport processing and emphasized the aim to eliminate the need for waiting in long lines. The new biometric system, inspired by practices in foreign countries, aims to reduce human contact and provide a more convenient passport collection process.
The Minister assured Nigerians of improved service delivery, stating, "Nigerians deserve the best; they don't have to suffer to obtain a passport." He announced the initiation of the E8 Mandate in the UK as the first step in this transformative process.
In addition to the digitization efforts, Tunji-Ojo emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for unethical behavior within the Ministry of Interior. He urged the public to report any misconduct as part of an anti-corruption strategy to enhance service effectiveness.
Looking ahead, the Ministry is actively working on enabling home delivery of passports by 2024. Collaborating with the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), the government aims to automate the end-to-end passport application process. Nigerians can expect a more streamlined experience, with online applications available by January and home delivery services operational by February. This initiative promises to significantly reduce waiting times, providing citizens with a hassle-free passport application experience.
