Job Opening: Legal Adviser, East

Key Responsibilities
Advisory/Agreements
- Provide legal advice on, prepare, and review a wide range of legal, commercial, and transactional contracts entered into by the company.
Debt Recovery
- Manage the legal risks associated with the company's credit portfolio in collaboration with other Legal Advisers. Tasks include issuing demand notices, coordinating with external solicitors to initiate recovery actions in court, maintaining a debt recovery register, and actively participating in Credit Control meetings.
Litigation Management
- Oversee the entire litigation portfolio for the Eastern Region. Develop strategies to avoid litigation and efficiently manage ongoing cases to minimize risks. Prepare monthly litigation reports, represent the company in court, and ensure the availability of necessary witnesses and documentation.
Landholding Management
- Investigate property titles prior to negotiations and expedite the perfection of the company’s interests/titles. Maintain and submit a monthly plot register.
Patrimonial Operations
- Support the Retail Development Department in acquisitions, disposals, and internal reclassifications. This includes providing legal advice, risk analysis, solution proposals, participation in negotiations, and the preparation and review of leaseholds and acquisitions.
Procedures
- Participate in the development and updating of legal procedures, guides, manuals, and operating methods.
Primary Legal Support to Head Office Divisions
- Provide legal support to all head office divisions including Lubricants, HSEQ, Human Resources, Retail & Cards, Commercial, Finance, and TotalEnergies Country Services.
Regional Regulatory Management
- Monitor and advise on applicable laws and regulations in 11 states within the Eastern Region. Ensure timely payment of ground rents, land use charges, and other statutory fees.
Law Enforcement Agents
- Represent the company in dealings with law enforcement agencies. Coordinate with company solicitors and proactively respond to prevent business disruptions.
Legal Training
- Facilitate training sessions for internal clients, Retail Sales Executives, Regional Retail Managers, and dealers within the Eastern Region.
External Correspondences
- Draft and review all external correspondences to ensure legal protection for the company.
Commercial Transactions
- Prepare, review, and negotiate contracts for goods and services. Collaborate with third-party legal counsels and guide company negotiators on relevant laws and strategies.
Administrative and Community Participation
- Participate in administrative panels, Area Sales meetings, and engage in public relations and credit control matters.
Context & Environment
- Engage with a diverse array of internal and external customers including staff, management, directors, external counsel, dealers, partners, and other stakeholders.
- Work independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
- Maintain regular contact with the Legal Affairs Manager/Company Secretary and external solicitors for court preparations and defense.
- Navigate the bureaucratic delays and bottlenecks of regional Land Registries and other Governmental Regulatory Agencies.
- Manage the judicial system's inefficiencies and the increasing arbitrariness of regulatory and security agencies.
- Address speculative lawsuits and criminal matters involving law enforcement that affect the company’s interests.
- Provide strategic legal advice to management and cover a wide geographical area for court and regulatory representation.
- Attend State High Courts, Federal High Courts, and Court of Appeal within the region as required.
Candidate Profile
- Must be a qualified Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria with at least 8 years of relevant experience.
- Thorough knowledge of Nigerian law and legal practices.
- Strong drafting skills, ability to synthesize key issues, and work autonomously in a demanding environment.
- Diplomatic with the ability to work in a multicultural setting.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and strong negotiation skills.
- Good team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
