OpenAI has opened the doors for anyone to craft their personalized ChatGPT with the GPT platform, an intuitive solution for developing tailor-made AI agents for a wide range of tasks. This exciting offering is exclusively available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. One year ago, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, a groundbreaking AI chatbot with seemingly limitless capabilities. Today, OpenAI unveils a no-code platform for creating bespoke versions of ChatGPT for specific applications, eliminating the need for coding expertise.
In the near future, these specialized AI agents, referred to as GPTs, will be accessible through the GPT Store. While detailed information about the store's appearance and functionality is limited at this stage, OpenAI promises to compensate creators based on the usage of their GPTs. These GPTs will cater to paying ChatGPT Plus subscribers and OpenAI enterprise customers, allowing them to design internal GPTs for their workforce.
The announcement of Custom GPTs was made at DevDay, OpenAI's inaugural developer conference in San Francisco. This event also marked the launch of a more powerful and cost-effective GPT-4, reduced pricing for developers utilizing OpenAI's models in their applications, and the remarkable achievement of ChatGPT garnering 100 million weekly users.
OpenAI recognized the demand for customization since ChatGPT's inception and introduced Custom Instructions in July, allowing users to set preferences. However, the demand for more control persisted. Many advanced users manually maintained lists of precisely crafted prompts and instructions, copying them into ChatGPT. GPTs now streamline this process.
In a recent demonstration, OpenAI showcased the GPT platform in action. For instance, a bot named the "Creative Writing Coach" critiqued a submitted PDF of a writing sample, and another GPT, "Event Navigator," was rapidly deployed to assist attendees during DevDay. The platform automatically assigned a name, generated a profile picture using DALL-E, and ingested a PDF attachment to provide schedule-related information.
OpenAI's interface empowers users to specify how they want their GPTs to engage with people before deployment. For instance, the DevDay Event Navigator was instructed to be helpful and concise while avoiding scheduling conflicts. OpenAI automatically generated conversation starter prompts, such as "What's the first session today?"
Each GPT can be equipped with web browsing capabilities, access to DALL-E, and OpenAI's Code Interpreter tool for software development and execution. The builder interface includes a "Knowledge" section for uploading custom data, like the DevDay event schedule. OpenAI is also introducing a feature called Actions, enabling GPTs to integrate with external services for data retrieval, starting with Canva and Zapier.
This introduction of custom GPTs positions OpenAI in competition with other AI bot platforms like Character.AI and Meta, which have recently introduced their own AI personas in messaging apps. OpenAI emphasizes utility-focused functionality over bots that mimic human interactions, although it remains open to the creation of GPTs with human-like personalities.
Creators of GPTs will not have access to the content of conversations people have with their agents, and it's unclear what level of usage data they will receive. OpenAI is committed to monitoring activity to prevent issues such as fraud, hate speech, and inappropriate content. When the GPT Store launches, it will only accept agents from individuals who have verified their identity, and initially, GPTs will be accessible through shareable web links.
Ultimately, OpenAI views its GPT platform as a significant step toward realizing its ultimate goal: the development of AGI, or artificial general intelligence. Restricting access to paying subscribers is expected to further boost the company's rapidly growing revenue, as it seeks a valuation of up to $90 billion from investors.
