Job Overview

The Operations Controller is responsible for managing the central processing unit of the terminal operating system. This role involves collaborating with representatives from various operational functions, such as marine operations, yard operations, MHC, and RTG, to ensure that daily productivity objectives are consistently met. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in coordinating the efficient execution of terminal operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership

   • Cascade departmental goals and performance objectives into actionable plans for the section/unit.
   • Provide leadership and direction to ensure synergy and coordination among teams within the section/unit.
   • Oversee and coordinate all activities within the section/unit to ensure smooth operations.
   • Collaborate with the Head of Operations in creating yearly implementation plans and performance objectives.
   • Establish systems for monitoring and evaluating progress against the unit's goals.

2. Vessel Pre-Arrival Planning

   • Request and receive necessary documents and plans (vessel plan) from the planning team within the specified timeframe.
   • Supervise and coordinate with various teams (planning, yard, equipment) to prepare for vessel arrivals.
   • Oversee yard allocation and distribution of operations, ensuring alignment with ship schedules.
   • Coordinate with Shift Managers to ensure smooth equipment distribution for vessel and yard operations.

3. Planning Execution

   • Work with shift managers upon vessel arrival to ensure efficient execution of vessel and yard operations.
   • Monitor real-time operations from the control room and provide status updates.
   • Evaluate operations at the end of each shift and reconcile them with outstanding activities for the next shift.
   • Ensure the correct sequence of vessel operations, adjusting plans as necessary for optimal efficiency.
   • Liaise with shipping line planners for operational updates, disseminating information to all relevant teams.

4. Post-Execution Analysis

   • Review all operational reports to ensure accuracy and identify any potential delays.
   • Collaborate with Yard and Marine Analysts to address any operational delays or discrepancies.

5. Team and People Management

   • Ensure the welfare and development of team members by recommending appropriate training.
   • Support the recruitment process for team members as necessary.
   • Manage team productivity through TICT’s performance management system.
   • Develop monthly rosters in consultation with other departments and ensure proper documentation.
   • Perform other duties as assigned by the business.

Qualifications and Experience

• A minimum of an HND or its equivalent in Supply Chain, IT, or a Maritime-related discipline.
• At least 5 years of relevant experience in a similar role.
• Certification from the Standard Institute of Shipping and Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt) is an advantage.

Skills and Competencies

• In-depth knowledge of port and terminal operations, including vessel, yard, equipment, and control room management.
• Strong understanding of the maritime industry, particularly in shipping line operations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, especially MS Excel.
• Excellent people management and resource allocation skills.
• Expertise in using terminal software and tools.
• Strong problem-solving, negotiation, and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to lead under pressure, make sound judgments, and drive operational improvements.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A proactive, ownership-driven mindset with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
