Job Description
The Regional Safety Officer will assist in implementing and maintaining a comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management system at IBEDC. The role focuses on ensuring continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental compliance within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and enforce compliance with HSE policies, procedures, and guidelines across the Oyo Region.
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments throughout the region, and propose effective control measures to prevent accidents and hazards.
- Collaborate in the execution of culture-changing programs aimed at fostering a sustainable safety culture within the company.
- Implement and oversee loss prevention programs such as accident prevention plans, safety meetings, toolbox talks, job hazard analysis workshops, and training programs.
- Investigate minor accidents and near-miss incidents, identify root causes, recommend remedial actions, and share learnings to prevent recurrence.
- Inspect protection schemes and ensure that documentation and storage meet required compliance standards.
- Ensure prompt closure of all non-conformance issues identified through audits, inspections, and accident investigations.
- Oversee the safe management of hazardous waste through proper storage, recycling, and disposal procedures.
- Establish and enforce process and product safety standards to minimize employees' exposure to potential hazards, including chemical, physical, and biological risks.
- Track safety trends and perform data analysis across business hubs and service units to report findings and escalate where necessary.
- Prepare and submit periodic and ad-hoc health and safety reports in line with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, integrating these standards into IBEDC's daily operations.
- Promote federal, state, and local safety and environmental programs and regulations within the organization.
- Inspect machinery and safety devices to ensure operational safety standards are being met.
- Perform other safety-related duties as assigned by the Regional Safety Supervisor.
Job Requirements
- A first degree in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline is an advantage.
- Membership in professional bodies such as ISPON, BCSP, or ISHM is highly desirable.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in the HSE field, particularly in utility, oil and gas, or telecommunications sectors.
- Technical Competencies:
- In-depth understanding of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
- Knowledge of the utility industry and relevant HSE policies.
- Strong risk management skills, including risk identification and mitigation.
- Familiarity with health and safety standards, regulations, and liability issues.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills.
- Proficiency in HSE tools and software systems.
- Ability to recognize and assess safety hazards and develop effective mitigation measures.
