Saxophone Cleaning Guide for Maintenance

Regular saxophone maintenance is crucial for both you and your instrument's health, preventing costly repairs. Cleaning your saxophone is simple, especially if it's the standard, half-bell shape. Investing in a saxophone cleaning kit saves time and effort.

Part 1: Cleaning the Interior

Step 1: Swab the Body Most saxophone cleaning kits include a brush or cloth on a string with a weight. Insert the weighted end into the bell, turn the sax upside down, and pull the swab through the body to remove moisture and foreign particles.

Step 2: Swab the Neck Insert a flexible swab through the larger base opening of the neck to remove any particles. Avoid contact with the cork to prevent swelling.

Step 3: Use a Pad Saver After swabbing, use a pad saver to remove residual moisture. Insert it through the body and let it absorb moisture before removing.

Step 4: Inspect & Clean the Key Pads Check for sticky pads and clean them using wet cotton swabs or thin paper to remove residue.

Part 2: Cleaning the Mouthpiece

Step 1: Clean the Interior Remove the reed and use a mouthpiece brush to remove residue. Rinse with cold water and dry with a lint-free cloth. Soaking in antiseptic mouthwash is effective for stubborn dirt.

Step 2: Sand Out Scratches Use sandpaper or a sanding block to remove light marks on rubber or resin mouthpieces.

Step 3: Clean the Reed Thoroughly wipe the reed after each use to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Soak dirty reeds briefly in antibacterial liquids before drying.

Part 3: Finishing Up

Step 1: Polish the Body Use a brass lacquer polishing cloth or add a small amount of spray furniture wax for a polished finish.

Step 2: Tighten Loose Screws Carefully tighten loose rod screws to ensure proper assembly.

Step 3: Clean Your Cleaners Wash specialty swabs and brushes by hand with soap to prolong their lifespan.
