The U.S. Mission to Nigeria is made up of two key locations: the Embassy in Abuja, FCT, and the Consulate General in Lagos. The Consulate General in Lagos serves as the Mission’s primary representative to the people of Nigeria in the southern region. The U.S. Embassy is currently seeking qualified applicants for the role of Telephone Technician in its Diplomatic Technology Office.

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, invites eligible candidates to apply for the Telephone Technician position within the Diplomatic Technology Office. This role is a critical part of maintaining and troubleshooting telecommunications systems for the U.S. Mission. Key Responsibilities

As a Telephone Technician, the incumbent will be responsible for a range of duties related to the installation, configuration, and maintenance of telephone systems used within the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and its associated tail sites.

  1. Telephone System Maintenance:

    • Configuring, programming, and repairing all telephone-related equipment.
    • Installing and maintaining systems used by the Department of State and its tenant agencies.
    • Ensuring the smooth operation of all telephone services.
  2. Coordination with Local Service Providers:

    • Acting as the liaison with local telephone service providers.
    • Managing all issues related to service provision and resolving any technical problems.
  3. Radio Technician Backup Support:

    • Assisting with the installation and programming of VHF/HF radios.
    • Providing backup support as a Radio Technician, including reprogramming handheld radios and issuing new radios to staff.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Educational Qualifications:
    At least two years of college or university studies are required.

  • Professional Experience:
    A minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience in the repair, installation, and maintenance of telephone systems, including electrical and structured cabling for telephone networks. Experience with associated software applications is also necessary.

Technical Knowledge

  • Telecommunication Systems:
    Knowledge of telecommunication systems, including those used in the host country, is essential. The role requires familiarity with various network systems, such as:

    • Nortel/Avaya
    • Cisco
    • Panasonic
    • VoIP systems
    • Local Area Networking
  • Technical Expertise:

    • Understanding of how telephone systems are wired and configured, including punch-down blocks and fault-correcting techniques.
    • Ability to operate a telephone switchboard and troubleshoot alternative routing systems.

Skills and Abilities

  • Problem Solving and Adaptability:
    Must be well-organized, able to work independently, and capable of resolving unforeseen technical challenges.

  • Computer Skills:
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer applications is required.

  • Customer Service Skills:
    The ability to interact effectively with individuals in a service-oriented environment. Experience in providing customer service is essential.

  • Physical Abilities:

    • Must be capable of lifting equipment and tools up to 20 lbs.
    • Proficiency in using a variety of test equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Driver’s License:
    A valid Nigerian driver's license is required, with at least five years of driving experience.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is USD 19,560.
