UEFA Joins Forces with Groupe Amaury to Elevate Ballon d'Or Starting 2024
In a significant development set to reshape the world of football awards, UEFA, the European football governing body, will play a pivotal role in the planning, organization, and execution of the renowned Ballon d'Or, starting from 2024. Since its inception in 1956, the Ballon d'Or has been under the purview of Groupe Amaury, the publishers of France Football magazine, and L’Equipe.
In 2010, a partnership between Groupe Amaury and FIFA led to the merger of the Ballon d'Or with the FIFA World Player of the Year award, creating the FIFA Ballon d'Or. However, this collaboration met its demise in 2016 when FIFA introduced The Best FIFA award, while Groupe Amaury continued to oversee the Ballon d'Or. Notably, the winners of the FIFA Ballon d'Or from 2010 to 2015, namely Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, retained their Ballon d'Or titles.
Following Lionel Messi's record-breaking eighth Ballon d'Or win in 2023, UEFA has officially partnered with Groupe Amaury to co-organize this prestigious award from 2024 onward. This collaboration entails the discontinuation of the UEFA Player of the Year awards, although UEFA will continue to honor outstanding players in their club competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
UEFA's statement regarding this collaboration emphasizes its commitment to contributing football expertise, global commercial rights management, and the orchestration of the annual awards gala. Together, UEFA and Groupe Amaury aim to elevate the standing and international reach of the Ballon d'Or, while fostering unity and collaboration within the global football community.
