The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is excited to announce the opening of applications for the 2024 ECA Fellowship. This prestigious programme is designed to provide young professionals in the early to mid-stages of their careers with invaluable practical experience in a dynamic, multicultural UN environment. The fellowship aims to enhance participants' exposure to the ECA’s wide-ranging initiatives and contribute significantly to Africa’s development goals.
Programme Overview
The ECA Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for emerging professionals to gain hands-on experience while contributing to the ECA’s mission. Fellows will engage with the Commission’s diverse programmes and services, addressing critical economic and social dimensions of Africa’s development priorities. This experience is expected to bolster their skills, enhance their capacity, and refine their intellectual abilities.
As a leading knowledge policy institution in Africa, the ECA is dedicated to nurturing bright young African talents through this fellowship. The initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader goal of strengthening member States' capacities in economic and social policy research, development, implementation, analysis, governance, and monitoring and evaluation. The fellowship is designed to cultivate a new generation of African intellectuals equipped with robust policy-making knowledge to support the continent’s economic and social transformation.

- Private Sector Development & Finance, including Innovative Finance & Capital Markets
- Poverty, Inequality, and Social Policy
- Food Systems and Food Security
- Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
- Demographic Dynamics for Development
- Innovation and Technology
- Data and Statistics Management
- Climate Change & Management of Natural Resources, including Green Economy
- Labor Economics and Employment
- Communication, Advocacy, Media Relations
- Knowledge Management, Information Management, and Librarianship
- Strategic Planning, Foresight Analysis, Monitoring and Evaluation, Partnership, and Resource Mobilization
- Administration, Human Resource, Budget and Financial Management

Qualifications
- Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in economics, development studies, political economy, international affairs, political and social sciences, public administration, law, minerals and natural resources, engineering, business administration, or a related field.
- Experience: Relevant academic research or work experience in the thematic areas. Experience in socio-economic and political development, natural resource management, regional integration, infrastructure development, governance, or peace-related areas in Africa is advantageous.
- Language: Fluency in English or French is required, with working knowledge of the other language desirable. Knowledge of additional UN languages is a plus.
Fellowship Conditions
- Applicants must be 35 years of age or younger at the time of application.
- Candidates must be nationals of a member State of the ECA.
- Candidates should have completed a master’s or doctorate degree program before 1 July 2024.
- Candidates must have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the thematic areas.
- Fellows will work on predefined projects, participate in meetings, and present a peer-reviewed research paper at the end of the assignment.
- Fellows will join an alumni association and the international development community of practice.
Logistics
- Fellows will be required to travel to the assigned duty station as determined by ECA.
- The fellowship includes a return air ticket, a one-off settling-in grant of USD 3,000 (for fellows recruited from outside the duty station), and a monthly stipend of USD 3,000.
- The final month’s stipend will be contingent upon submission of required documents, including a peer-reviewed research paper and a comprehensive fellowship report.
- The fellowship is for six months, with a possibility of extension for an additional six months.
