Founded in 1970, the University of Benin began as an Institute of Technology and transitioned to a full-fledged university in 1971, following approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC). Under the leadership of Col. S. O. Ogbemudia, the name change to the University of Benin was announced in April 1972. The university became a federal institution in 1975 at the request of the State Government.

Job Responsibilities
The University Librarian will report to the Vice Chancellor and will oversee the administration of the university's library, including coordination of library services across various campuses, colleges, and departments. Candidates must demonstrate innovative approaches to managing an ICT-driven library, promoting a world-class e-library with current resources.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree in Library Science (minimum second class lower division) and a Ph.D.
- At least 15 years of post-qualification experience, including five years as Deputy Librarian in a university or similar institution.
- Proven research contributions through publications in reputable journals.
Conditions of Service
The successful candidate will hold office for a single term of five years, in accordance with the applicable terms for Federal Universities in Nigeria. Candidates must not exceed the age of 60 years at the time of appointment.
Salary
Remuneration will align with the standards for University Librarians at Federal Universities in Nigeria, subject to government and governing council reviews.
