USAID Allocates $30 Million for Multi-Country Anti-Corruption Initiatives
The United States, through USAID, is committing up to $30 million over a five-year period to bolster multi-country initiatives aimed at combatting corruption across various sectors.
The initiative targets high-risk, high-opportunity sectors, including real estate, extractives, infrastructure, and pharmaceuticals.
The Main Aim Of The Funding
This funding prioritizes key reforms such as enhancing asset recovery, revealing beneficial ownership, and closing loopholes that enable illicit finance and money laundering. The objective is to systematically address governance weaknesses commonly exploited by corrupt entities.
The funding seeks to strengthen systems and entities to close gaps, detect illicit financial activities, trace illegal funds across borders, and ultimately bring corrupt actors to justice.
The overarching goal is to enhance a country's resilience against transnational corruption, grand corruption, and kleptocracy.
Insight
At the regional and global levels, the initiative will support multi-country projects to bolster international cooperation in tracking and preventing transnational corruption. It will also experiment with tools and approaches to advance anti-corruption practices.
This initiative aligns with USAID’s comprehensive efforts to combat transnational corruption, reflecting the Anti-Corruption Policy and a significant outcome of the Presidential Initiative for Democratic Renewal, introduced by President Biden at the first Summit for Democracy in 2021.
The program will be implemented by a consortium comprising leading global organizations and local reformers actively involved in cutting-edge anti-corruption initiatives.
Finally, the Global Accountability Program/Strengthening National Architectures to Counter Corruption Activity will enhance USAID’s capabilities in countering corruption, supporting the mission of the USAID Anti-Corruption Center to revolutionize the fight against corruption on both domestic and international fronts, mitigating its adverse effects on development and democracy.
