MLK Day, a federal holiday honoring civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., falls on Monday, January 15th this year. As you go about your day, running errands, and managing financial affairs, you may wonder about the stock market's status. Here's everything you need to know about the stock market on MLK Day 2024.
Is the Stock Market Closed on MLK Day 2024?
MLK Day being a federal holiday means the stock market will be closed on January 15th to observe it. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market adhere to the same holiday schedule. Unfortunately, this means trading won't be possible on MLK Day.
As the stock market typically closes over the weekend, plan to complete your trades by Friday, January 12th. Alternatively, if there's no urgency, you can resume trading when the market reopens on Tuesday, January 16th.
While the bond market follows a slightly different holiday schedule than the stock market, it will also be closed on MLK Day. Ensure you plan accordingly!
Stock Market Holiday Schedule 2024
Beyond MLK Day, the stock market will be closed on ten holidays throughout the year. These include New Year's Day, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Additionally, the stock market will close early on the day before the Fourth of July, Black Friday, and Christmas Eve, with trading concluding at 1 p.m. EST on these days.
On regular business days, the stock market typically operates from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. Keep in mind that the markets are closed on weekends.
Bond Market Holiday Schedule 2024
The bond market shares a similar holiday schedule with the stock market, closing on the same ten holidays. However, it also observes additional closures on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. Six early closures at 2 p.m. EST are scheduled for specific days, including the day before Good Friday, the Friday before Memorial Day, the day before the Fourth of July, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve.
