Wine Stain on the Carpet? Here's a Quick Cleanup Guide

Carpets, simply put, are fantastic. They add a touch of luxury to any space and can bring together mismatched furniture and accessories.

Some studies suggest that carpets might be beneficial for people with allergies and respiratory issues, as they trap dust and allergens, keeping them away from immediate breathing areas.

However, the challenge lies in maintaining and cleaning carpets, especially when dealing with liquid spills that can leave stubborn stains, like red wine.

While the easiest solution is to call in professional cleaners, the ideal approach is to address the wine spillage promptly to prevent color penetration into the fabric. Here are some tips to rescue your carpets from potential ruin:

  1. Blot the Wine:

    • Use paper towels or a plain white cloth to blot the spill.
    • Pat or lightly press the spill; avoid rubbing or scrubbing.
    • Start blotting from the outer edges to prevent spreading.
    • Once dry, pour cold, clean water to dilute remaining wine and continue blotting.
  2. Try Club Soda:

    • Pour club soda on the wine spill, let it fizz, and repeat the blotting process until the stain vanishes.
    • The carbonation in club soda dissolves and lifts the pigment from carpet fabrics.
  3. Use Vinegar:

    • After blotting, dampen a white cloth in a mixture of 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid, and 2 cups warm water.
    • Apply the mixture to the carpet and blot with a dry cloth.
  4. Saturate With Wine Cleaner:

    • If available, use carpet-compatible wine cleaner, soak the area for the specified time, and blot once the stain is gone.
    • For tougher stains, mix the cleaner with the vinegar, dishwashing liquid, and warm water solution.
  5. Salt It:

    • While the stain is still damp, sprinkle salt on it to draw out moisture.
    • Let it dry, and the salt should turn pink or purplish, indicating absorption of the wine.
    • Vacuum off the salt after removing it by hand.
  6. Try Peroxide:

    • Test hydrogen peroxide on a small, hidden area to ensure no discoloration.
    • If safe, mix one part dishwashing liquid with two parts peroxide, apply, blot, and repeat until the stain is gone.

Maintaining carpets requires effort, but it's undoubtedly worthwhile. In the event of accidents like wine spills, these tips can help restore your carpets to their original state.
